SIXTY SECOND REVIEW:
So, you like the Village voice, and you wish there was something similar in a Hispanic version. Well, there just might be. Have you heard of New York Latino? Well, neither did I till a friend pointed it out to me one day at Barnes and Noble. If I had to describe this magazine to some one I would have to say that it the closest we've come (Hispanics) to having a magazine touching on the nerve of what it "hip" and "cool" while still retaining it's integrity and intelligence. Unlike a lot of the other pieces here, New York Latino Not only hits on what's of topic here in the states but it's also not afraid to go over seas and back in time to present it's readers with stories or topics that they might find of relevance. From what I could gather not only are the stories well written but they are just as well researched. In this particular issue you could go from reading about Puerto Rican injustices happening in their own country by the US military, to the Hip Hop scene in Cuba, to Jeff Valdez and his Si TV venture. The makers of this magazine have even been kind enough as to include a Club Guide at the end of each issue. You know, sometimes it's nice to know what's happening out there on them mean streets. The only real down side I could see to the publication would have to be it's size. At a rough 10 ˝ x 14 inches, this thing can be a little awkward to carry. Where as the Village voice is made from newspaper cover to cover, This magazine uses a lower grade of paper stock for the internal pages and a lower grade of waxed paper for the cover. I mention this just because it's annoying when you're carrying this thing along with some other magazines and you have to keep catching the smaller ones that are falling since you can't get a good grasp due to the larger one. Did that make sense? Oh well, it's late and I have to got to work in the morning. Anyway that's it's, and yes, I do recommend this magazine to you guys and gals; especially if you live in the New York area. After all, it is named New York Latino.
